Masers in AGN environments
Galactic nuclei are well known sources of OH and H2O maser emission. It appears that intense star formation in ultra-luminous infrared galaxies drives most OH sources. In contrast, nuclear activity appears to drive most H2O sources. When H2O emission originates in accretion disk structures, constrained geometry and dynamics enable robust interpretation of spectroscopic and imaging data. The pri...
متن کاملWater masers in dusty environments
We study in details a pumping mechanism for the λ = 1.35 cm maser transition 616 → 523 in ortho-H2O based on the difference between gas and dust temperatures. The upper maser level is populated radiatively through 414 → 505 and 505 → 616 transitions. The heat sink is realized by absorbing the 45 μm photons, corresponding to the 523 → 414 transition, by cold dust. We compute the inversion of mas...
متن کاملOh Satellite Line Masers and an Agn Candidate in M82
We report the detection of OH satellite line masers at 1720 MHz and 1612 MHz from the nuclear region of the starburst galaxy M82. The observations were aimed at detecting 1720 MHz maser emission from the known radio emitting SNR in the nuclear region. At 1720 MHz we detect six features above the 5σ limit set by noise, four in emission and two in absorption. Three of the emission features appear...
متن کاملATLASGAL — Environments of 6.7 GHz methanol masers
Using the 870-μm APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL), we have identified 577 submillimetre continuum sources with masers from the methanol multibeam (MMB) survey in the region 280 < l < 20; | b | < 1.5. 94 per cent of methanol masers in the region are associated with sub-millimetre dust emission. We estimate masses for ∼450 maser-associated sources and find that methanol m...
متن کاملAccretion and Outflow Traced by H 2 O Masers in the Circinus AGN
The first VLBI images of H 2 O maser emission in the Circinus Galaxy AGN show both a warped, edge-on accretion disk and an outflow 0.1 to 1 pc from the central engine. The inferred central mass is 1.3 × 10 6 M ⊙ , while the disk mass may be on the order of 10 5 M ⊙ , based on a nearly Keplerian rotation curve. The bipolar, wide-angle outflow appears to contain " bullets " ejected from within < ...
